Lappy Talk.

I have been busy lately - the most over-used excuse of any mom with kids (or anybody for that matter).

I hardly have time to lull and enjoy time with G, my Dell laptop. Lately, I have been reading some focus group discussion threads on recommendations for laptops. I have been a pro-Dell user ever since (even if this is my first laptop) primarily because of recommendations. I am very very intrigued with MAC computers, especially the MACBook Air, but as long as Im going to stay home and take care of the kids, that aint gonna happen.

Anyway, like I said, there is a great article over at ShopWiki on how to pick the laptop for you. There are many things to consider when buying one and the article says to choose one feature that is extremely important for you - is it portability (weigh), space (hard drive), clarity of videos (video cards), internet connection (wi-fi ready), etc. Based from experience (I have a Dell Inspiron 1525), Im pretty happy with my customized laptop - I just should have upgraded my laptop battery. Mine just lasts 3 hrs and needs to be plugged in again - that wont work when Im out.

We need a new desktop.

Well, honestly, just an lcd monitor. But if you ask the husband we might as well upgrade everything. The LCD has been blinking on and off for sometime now but lately it has been blurring a lot as well. We are holding onto it as long as it will hold on its own as a new desktop isnt on our plans for the next couple of months. We are pretty heavy graphic viewers - watching movies, using Adobe a lot so the monitor is extremely important to us (good thing I have G!).

The Need to Stay Connected.

I still get a silly smile whenever people ask me how I survive living in the suburbs without a landline phone, a car to take me places (like the grocery), and things “needed” in the city. I just say, “Well, I have the kids to keep me busy and the Internet to keep me sane.” I do need, however, a cellphone to keep me connected to the husband and in cases of emergency. We anticipated long minutes spent calling each other so we decided to subscribe to a company that has a plan for unlimited calls and texts within the same network. They have dual plans perfect for the family so we got one subscription - which let us have three phones. The husband and I got one each, and we gave one to my son, which is originally intended to be used as a “house phone”. Imagine our surprise and indignation (yes, I was so frustrated I refused to pay our phone bill) when we moved and found out the cellular company didnt have any signal within our area! Que horror! I lodged a complaint against them when somebody reached me asking me to update my bill with them. It is good though that after three days, cellphone reception signal was strong. Imagine the plan being wasted if there wasnt any signal at all. There are times the signal gets weak and that’s when I am sorely tempted to get a cell phone signal booster, especially since talking with the husband over a choppy line is extremely frustrating.

Basically, the kit - SOHO Quick Kit - is a quick set up kind. Basically built for mobile homes (RVs and motorhomes), it boosts cell signals (Disclaimer:The dual band 50 dB (both 800 & 1900 MHz frequencies) wireless amplifier works with ALL North American cell phones, data cards and carriers except Nextel/iDEN.) You dont need any cables to install the kit. It retails for $399.95.

Zooming in with Technology.

I think we are a family of geeks.

I recently got myself a laptop - my first.
It’s a Dell Inspiron 1525 with the following specs:
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T5450 (1.66GHz/667Mhz FSB/2MB cache)
Vista
2GB RAM
120GB HD
CD / DVD Writer (DVD+/-RW Drive)
15.4 Anti glare screen
Webcam, bluetooth, LAN
Intel® 3945 802.11a/g Mini-card
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
Integrated Sound Blaster Audigy

And yes, it’s in pink. Good strategy so the husband wont need to borrow it. :)
It takes awhile to get used to Vista as the OS but Im adapting.

Another change I need to get used to.
