Caring for Your Motorcycle Batteries

Motorcycle batteries, unlike car batteries, usually last for a lifetime if cared for properly. It has been proven that motorcycle batteries perform perfectly well with only little maintenance required every month. These are extremely durable battery types and can keep your vehicle in a running condition for several years to come

Your motorcycle battery should be kept charged at 100%, recharged when the lights dim, the starter sounds wear or if it hasn’t been used in more than two weeks. You can always have it checked at a battery store.

Here is a simple checklist that can help you:

1.     Keep the batteries clean, dry and free of dirt.

2.     Check terminals every time to prevent corrosion.

3.     Check electrolyte level (for conventional types).

4.     Check inside motorcycle batteries for excessive sediment, sulfation or mossing.

5.     Replace caps firmly.

6.     Check the exhaust tube – it must be free of kinks and clogs. Check cables and clamps for damage or loose connections.

7.     Charge batteries once a month.

8.     Do not let the battery get discharged and let it be that way.

9.     If the battery will not be used for a long period of time (more than 30 days) – make sure that it is connected to a battery charger.

10. Prevent it from being dropped.
